ISSF Excursions

We have lined up 5 excursions for participants to choose from! Each excursion will visit two locations

Excursion 1 – Nature and  Agriculture in Singapore

For those who love the outdoors! Yes! There is space for nature on our urbanized and densely packed island.  For this trip, you will get to visit a high tech farm and a nature reserve. This option will involve a fair bit of walking outdoors in the tropical heat

Location

Introduction

Sky Greens Farm

www.skygreens.com

Sky Greens farm uses a “vertical farming” system to make the best use of land, which is a limited resource in Singapore. It is the world’s first low carbon, hydraulically driven vertical farm.  It uses green urban solutions to achieve production of safe, fresh and delicious vegetables with minimal land, water and energy resources.   You can learn more about this unique patented farming system as you walk through the growing troughs mounted on an A-shape frame.

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserves

https://www.nparks.gov.sg/sbwr

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserves is Singapore’s first ASEAN Heritage Park. It is made up of 202ha of mangroves, mudflats, ponds and forests, and serves as an important reserve of both indigenous and migratory birds.  You can uncover a world filled with rich biodiversity as you wander through the wetlands.

Excursion 2 - Research at NUS

Get to see the cutting edge research being carried out at the National University of Singapore (NUS)! This trip will visit two institutions doing advanced research in interdisciplinary areas

Location

Introduction

Mechanobiology Institute

(MBI)

http://mbi.nus.edu.sg/

Mechanobiology   is an emerging field of science at the interface of biology and engineering. It focuses on the way that physical forces and changes in cell or tissue mechanics contribute to development, physiology and disease. MBI works to develope powerful new computational models, experimental reagents, and tools for studying diseases of cells and tissues. Its goal is to transfer these basic discoveries to both the clinic and the classroom.   You will attend a talk by an MBI researcher and there will be lab tour consisting of a series of demonstrations.

Singapore Synchrotron Light Source (SSLS)

http://ssls.nus.edu.sg/

A synchrotron is a large particle accelerator that circulates a steam of ions in a circular in a loop. This generates large amounts of electromagnetic radiation that is useful for research. The SSLS has a R&D program featuring micro/nanofabrication, a variety of analytical applications, and the development of advanced synchrotron radiation instrumentation.  Synchrotron radiation enables us to look into living organisms, man-made materials and advanced engineering components, with spatial and time resolution, revealing detailed structural, chemical, electronic, and magnetic properties. You can learn more about synchrotron radiation and how it has become indispensable in many disciplines.

Excursion 3 – Research at NTU

Get to see the cutting edge research being carried out at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU).  You will get the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, as well as get to see some of the most sophisticated 3D printers available!

Location

Introduction

School of Physical & Mathematical Sciences (SPMS)

http://www.spms.ntu.edu.sg/

SPMS provides an environment conducive for intellectual pursuits which help to attract and retain the very best global talent: faculty, researchers and students. It is made up of cluster of three interconnected buildings, housing the Divisions of Chemistry & Biological Chemistry, Mathematical Sciences, and Physics & Applied Physics.   You can learn more on its philosophy of advancing multidisciplinary collaborations while promoting excellence in the core areas.

Singapore Centre for 3D Printing

(SC3DP)

http://sc3dp.ntu.edu.sg/Pages/Home.aspx

3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing (AM), refers to various processes used to synthesize a three-dimensional object by building up layer after layer. This process allows for the rapid manufacture of complicated shapes. The SC3DP house some of the most advanced 3D printers in Singapore. Together with a strong pool of qualified researchers and collaboration with industry partners, SC3DP will extensively improve and create innovative technologies and novel processes, contributing to manpower and talent development for growing needs of the world.  You can learn more about the use of 3-D printing in manufacturing and precision engineering with the demonstrations of a large number of printers, including one that prints Chocolate!

Excursion 4 – Aerospace Industry

If you love aeroplanes, this one is for you! If you took a flight to attend ISSF 2016, you are likely to have used the products of Thales and Airbus.

Location

Introduction

Thales (Innovation Hub)

Thales is a global technology leader in the Aerospace, Transportation and Defence & Security markets.  It has grown from strength to strength, building up industrial capability in avionics production & maintenance, repair & overhaul (MRO), enhancing its competencies in the fields of transportation & security and contributing to the local Defence and R&D eco-system.   Through this visit, you will get to experience France’s creative innovation imprint firsthand.

Airbus (Helicopters & Innovation group)

Airbus Group promotes cutting-edge technologies and scientific excellence to contribute to global progress and deliver solutions for the challenges posed by such societal issues as environmental protection, mobility, defence, security and safety.   You can learn how Airbus serves to strengthen Singapore’s position as one of Asia’s centres of excellence in aeronautical research.

Excursion 5 – Manufacturing Industry

Get to visit the places that make things you use almost everyday! Learn about the semi-conductor industry, and find out what 3M makes, apart from Post-it TM !

Location

Introduction

Micron Singapore

http://sg.micron.com/

Micron Technology is a global leader in the semiconductor industry. Singapore is home to Micron’s largest manufacturing footprint with three fabrication facilities and a test and assembly facility.
