1. How many application phases are there per year?
For Year 1 admission in 2019, 100% of the places are offered via the DSA-Sec Exercise. Registration for DSA-Sec Exercise is from 2 April to 17 June 2018.
If there are vacancies after the DSA-Sec Exercise, interested students must register for the Supplementary Intake Exercise (SIE) from 1 to 14 November 2018. The actual application will open on the day of release of PSLE results and close at 10 am on the third day of the release of the PSLE results.
For Year 3 admission in 2019, the registration is 2 April to 17 June 2018.
2. How old must an applicant be to qualify for admission?
For admission to Year 1 at NUS High School, local applicants must currently be in Primary Six. Overseas applicants must either be currently reading or have completed Singapore Primary Six education (or its equivalent). In addition, applicants should not be older than 15 years of age as of 1 January 2019.
The application for admission to Year 3 at NUS High School is only open to Singapore Citizens (SC) and Singapore Permanent Residents (SPR). Local applicants must currently be in Secondary Two. SC and SPR must either be currently in or have completed Singapore Secondary Two education (or its equivalent). In addition, applicants should not be older than 17 years of age as of 1 January 2019.
3. What if I do not have internet access for online application?
For those with no internet access, computer terminals will be set up at the NUS High School (Annex Office) for applicants to register online.
Questions 4 to 11 are applicable only to DSA-Sec Year 1 and Admission to Year 3.
4. When do I have to submit the supporting documents to NUS High School?
For Year 1 applicants:
Before the Selection Test: Scanned copies of the P4, P5 and P6 semester 1 school results are to be submitted via the online application portal.
Before the Selection Camp: Other supporting documents are to be submitted on 14 July 2018 (Selection Camp date). Only applicants who have been shortlisted for the Selection Camp and / or Interview are required to do so.
For Year 3 applicants:
Before the Selection Test: Scanned copies of the Sec 1 and Sec 2 semester 1 school results are to be submitted via the online application portal.
Before the Selection Interview: Other supporting documents are to be submitted before 13 September 2018 (Selection Interview date). Only applicants who have been shortlisted for the Selection Interview are required to do so.
As supporting documents are non-returnable, the applicant is advised to provide only photocopies of the original documents.
5. What will the Selection Test be based on?
The selection test will assess the understanding and application of mathematics and science that have been taught in schools. There will also be general knowledge questions to assess how widely read students are in the fields of mathematics and the sciences.
6. Where will the Selection Test be held?
For Year 1 admission, the Selection Test will be held at different test centers. Applicants will be given the option to choose the test center during registration (after payment is made). For Year 3 admission, the Selection Test will be held at NUS High School of Mathematics and Science.
7. What model of calculator is allowed in the Year 3 Selection Test?
No calculators are allowed for both Year 1 and Year 3 Selection Tests.
8. What if I am unable to sit for the test?
Applicants who have registered but are unable to sit for the test because of official engagement (e.g. school competition, public performance) will have to write in to the Principal at least one week in advance, and the application will be considered on a case- by- case basis
9. When will I be informed if I am shortlisted for the Camp (Year 1)?
Applicants who are shortlisted for the Selection Camp will be informed by second week of July 2018. The Camp will be held on 14 July 2018.
10. When will I be informed if I am shortlisted for the Interview (Year 3)?
Applicants who are shortlisted for the Selection Interview will be informed by first week of September 2018. The Interview will be held on 13 September 2018.
11. What is assessed during the Selection Camp and Selection Interview?
We look for qualities such as problem solving abilities, passion and motivation, independence, creativity and communication abilities.
Questions 12 to 24 are applicable only to Year 1 Supplementary Intake Exercise (SIE).
12. Does NUSHS participate in the Secondary One (S1) posting exercise?
No. NUSHS does not participate in the S1 posting exercise. Students who wish to participate in the NUSHS SIE must apply online at our online application portal.
13. Do I need to participate in the S1 posting exercise if I’ve applied for NUSHS SIE?
Yes. You MUST continue to participate in the S1 Posting Exercise to opt for your six choices of schools and Third Language (if applicable). If you are successful in the NUSHS SIE and accepted the SIE’s offer, you will not be posted to another school under the S1 Posting Exercise. However, if you have opted for Third Language in the S1 Posting Exercise, it will still be processed based on your Third Language choices.
14. Can I apply SIE if I have applied for DSA but unsuccessful?
Yes. You may apply for SIE. Selection of applicants in the SIE will be based on the PSLE performance, the applicants' primary school's academic results, portfolio or other indications that show their aptitude and passion in math and science.
15. When can I register for NUSHS SIE?
You may submit your particulars online and post your documents to NUSHS from 1 – 14 November 2018. The SIE will be open on the day of release of the PSLE results, if there are vacancies available.
16. Do I need to re-register online for SIE if I have already completed the online application for DSA?
Yes. For those who have applied for the DSA previously, you need to just log in and update your information, especially the P6 Prelims results at the same online registration portal from 1 - 14 November 2018.
17. What are the required supporting documents for SIE?
We require P4, P5 & P6 results, achievements, competitions, awards and scholarships certificates. Supporting documents are to be submitted by 14 November 2018.
I request for phone interview if I am overseas during the Interview period?
No. You must attend the Interview in NUS High School. Students who miss the interview is considered as a withdrawal from the SIE application.
20. If I am posted to a secondary school based on DSA, am I still eligible for the SIE?
No. You are not eligible to apply for the Supplementary Intake Exercise (SIE).
21. If I am posted to a secondary school via DSA, can I still apply for a transfer to other schools after getting the PSLE results?
No. You are not eligible for transfer unless there is/are extenuating reason(s).
22. My child went through the DSA - Selection Test, Camp and / or Interview but was not selected. Will the DSA performance still be taken into consideration in the SIE?
Selection of applicants in the SIE will be based on the PSLE performance, the applicants' primary school's academic results, portfolio or other indications that show their aptitude and passion in math and science.
23. What is the cut-off point for NUS High School?
As NUS High School is not in the S1 Posting Exercise, there is no cut-off point for NUS High School.
24. What if there is no vacancy available for SIE?
The SIE will not be opened.
25. Is ESIS applicable in NUSHS?
Yes. ESIS is awarded to students who are admitted to all independent schools, based on their PSLE results.
26. How would I know if I am accepted by NUS High School?
For Year 1 Direct School Admission (DSA), successful applicant will be notified and given a Letter of Offer (Confirmed Offer / Wait List) during the 'DSA School Preview' session on 11 August 2018. For Year 3 Admission, all successful applicants will be notified and given a Letter of Confirmed Offer via e-mail by the end of September 2018.
For Year 1 Supplementary Intake Exercise (SIE), successful applicant will be notified and given a Letter of Offer (Confirmed Offer / Wait List) within the Secondary One Option Phase.
