Inter-Racial Inter-Religious Harmony Nite 2011

The NUS High School Gamelan Ensemble had an opportunity to perform at the annual Inter-Racial Inter-Religious Harmony Nite 2011, held this year on 9 July at Resorts World Sentosa. The night aims to encourage people to respect and tolerate the diverse cultures in Singapore. Graced by His Excellency the President himself, Mr SR Nathan, the event saw more that 2000 people and eight organizations come together to commemorate the racial and religious harmony the country currently enjoys.
Gamelan sees mainly Malay student participants, but with non-Malays forming the majority of the award-winning team, the ensemble is a testament to harmony, amongst the instruments and the people. It was for this reason that the ensemble was chosen to represent Yayasan Mendaki as one of the performances lined up for the night.
The event also served as a platform for showcasing the medley of modern as well as classic pieces the ensemble put together, as a refreshing change from the usual traditional songs. The resultant product was well-received by the guests at the event and the ensemble hopes for further opportunities to cultivate the appreciation of Asian music.
