Singapore Primary Science Olympiad (SPSO)

The Singapore Primary Science Olympiad (SPSO) is an annual national competition organized by the NUS High School of Mathematics and Science since 2009. This competition, which is open to Primary 5 students in all primary schools in Singapore, will take place over two days and involves two rounds: the Theory and Practical Rounds.

SPSO aims to

  • Identify Singapore's Science representatives for the International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO)
  • Generate greater interest in Biology, Chemistry and Physics among Primary school students.
  • Cultivate enthusiasm and instil a passion for science subjects.
  • Provide an avenue to showcase students' abilities in the subjects 
  • Nurture talents in the Sciences

SPSO 2014


COMPETITION SCHEDULE FOR SPSO 2014

THEORY ROUND (Written) Date: 12 July 2014, Saturday 

Venue: NUS High School

Time: 9.30 am to 10.30 am
All registered participants
PRACTICAL ROUND Date: 25 July 2014, Friday

Venue: NUS High School Laboratories

Time: 2.15 pm (Reporting time)
3.00 pm to 5.00 pm
By invitation

Online registration period: 1st March to 30th April 2014

Award ceremony will be held on 30 August 2014, Saturday.

The top students from these rounds of SPSO will be shortlisted for a training programme conducted by NUS High School in preparation for International Mathematics & Science Olympiad (IMSO). The final squad, which consists of six official participants and two reserves, will be selected to form the Science team to represent Singapore in IMSO 2014



SPSO 2013


In 2013, more than 600 from 107 primary schools in Singapore participated in SPSO. The award ceremony was held on 24th August and Prof Imre Leader from Trinity College, University of Cambridge was invited as the guest of honour. Prof Imre presented the awards to the winners of SPSO 2013.

SPSO 2012

In 2012, more than
­­600 participants from 90 primary schools in Singapore participated in SPSO. The award ceremony was held on 18th August and Prof Leo Tan Wee Hin, the president and fellow of Singapore National Academy of Science, was invited as the guest of honour. Prof Tan presented the awards to the winners of SPSO 2012.

SPSO 2011


In 2011, more than 600 participants from 86 primary schools of Singapore participated in SPSO. The award ceremony was held on 20th August and Prof Chong Chi Tat, the Head of Math Department from NUS, was invited as the guest of honor. Prof Chong presented the awards to the winners of SPSO 2011.

SPSO 2010

In 2010, more than 300 participants from primary schools of Singapore participated in SPSO. The award ceremony was successfully held on 21th August 2010. The guest of honour for the event was Prof Mark Featherstone, the Interim Dean of College of Science, NTU. Prof Mark presented the awards to the winners of SPSO 2010.
