Achievements


2014

  • The 46th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) was held in Hanoi, Vietnam, from 20 to 29 July, 2014. IChO is an annual competition for the world’s most talented chemistry students at the secondary school level. Nations around the world send a team of four students, who are tested on their chemistry knowledge and skills in a five-hour laboratory practical and five-hour written theoretical examination. The IChO helps develop and enhance friendly relations among young people around the world. It also promotes international contacts in chemistry and encourages international cooperation and understanding. Brandon Tan Kai Jie of NUS High School represented Singapore in this event and successfully clinched a silver metal. Congratulations to Brandon!

  • NUS High School emerged as Champion in the Ice cream Innovation Competition 2014. This competition is organised by Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) and Swensen’s. This is the 3rd year we participate in this competition and we have achieved champion for two consecutive years (2013 & 2014). This is the best performance for NUS High School Our team defeated nine teams from other secondary schools with their special concocted ice cream flavor - sweet potato and ikan bilis.Students were selected from the module CM2301 Kitchen Chemistry. This competition serves as an extension to apply what they have learnt to challenge their creativity.

2013

  • Chua Anlong of NUS High School represented Singapore as part of the national team in the 45th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) held from 15th to 24th July 2013 in Moscow, Russia. We are pleased to announce that he did the school proud by obtaining a Gold medal and also emerging as the top scorer for Singapore and was ranked 12th in the world.

  • The Singapore Chemistry Olympiad (SChO) is jointly organised by the Singapore National Institute of Chemistry (SNIC), Chemistry Department of National University of Singapore and the Ministry of Education. The competition is open to JC 1 or equivalent students. It consists of a theory test and a practical test, each of approximately 3 hours, taken over two days.
    The 25th Singapore Chemistry Olympiad Theory and Practical rounds were held in the National        University of Singapore in November 2013. NUS High School secured a total of 6 Golds, 9 Silvers     and 1 Bronze.

  • NUS Chemical Engineering Challenge 2013 (EUREKA) took place on 7th Jun 2013 and is organised by the NUS Chemical Engineering Students’ Society. It is a team competition for JC students to apply chemical engineering principles through various activities. This competition provides a platform for students to challenge their problem-solving skills and to deepen understanding of Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. It also fosters the understanding on how theoretical and scientific concepts can be applied in engineering and the daily life. A total of 17 teams (9 schools) participated in this competition.
     We are pleased to announce that our NUS High Team emerged as the 2nd runner-up.

    • NUS High School emerged as Champion in Swensen's Yummy Healthy Ice-cream Finals held at Nanyang Polytechnic. Our team defeated 10 teams from other secondary schools with their special concocted ice cream flavor - mushroom, broccoli and pumpkin.

    2012

    • Tan Zhi Yang of NUS High School represented Singapore as part of the national team in the 44th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) held from 21st to 31st July 2012 in Washington DC. We are pleased to announce that he has won the Silver award.
        Congratulations!

     

    • NUS High School clinched 6 Gold, 7 Silver, 3 Bronze and 2 Merit awards in the 24th Singapore Chemistry Olympiad (SChO), held on 19th and 28th Nov 2012. This competition is jointly organised by the Singapore National Institute of Chemistry (SNIC), Chemistry Department of National University of Singapore and the Ministry of Education. SChO is open to JC 1 students and consists of a theory test and a practical test, each of approximately 4-5 hours.
        In addition, Chua Anlong (M12507) also won the Top Student award.

    • NUS High School won 86 medals - 22 Gold, 28 Silver and 36 Bronze medals and was awarded the Top School Award (Band 1) in the Singapore Junior Chemistry Olympiad (SJChO). This competition provides a platform for all upper secondary students to challenge themselves in their chemical knowledge and skills. It also seeks to promote the excitement in learning and doing Chemistry as well as to identify and develop chemistry talents. This year, over 2400 students from almost 50 secondary schools took part in the competition.
        In addition, Ng Yu Hao, Victor (M12403) has obtained overall 5th and Muhammad Haikal Bin Abdullah Zain (M12406) obtained overall 1st in Theory Round.

    • NUS High School won the Overall Champion in NUS Chemical Engineering Challenge 2012, REACT, organized by the NUS Chemical Engineering Students’ Society and took place on 25 July 2012. It is a team competition for JC students to apply chemical engineering principles through various activities. This competition provides a platform for students to challenge their problem-solving skills and to deepen understanding of Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. It also fosters the understanding on how theoretical and scientific concepts can be applied in engineering and the daily life.

    • NUS High School won two team awards in the 10th National Crystal Growing Competition 2012, a biennial event organised by NUS Chemistry Department. This competition aims to provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate their creativity in growing beautiful crystals, and to discover the importance of good practical techniques in chemistry through this fun project.

    2011

    • Ian Seet, a Year 6 NUS High School student, has won a silver medal in the International Chemistry Olympiad 2011. This is the second time that an NUS High student is selected to be part of the Singapore national team and clinched an award in this international chemistry competition.

     

    • NUS High School clinched the Best Team Award in the 23rd Singapore Chemistry Olympiad in 2011. 18 of our students did the school proud by winning 5 Golds, 11 Silvers, and 2 Bronzes from the competition. In addition, Pham Trong Binh has obtained the top overall score for the theoretical and practical rounds and was accorded the Best Student award.

     

        Out of the 18 students who participated in the Olympiad, 7 of them are selected for the

        International Chemistry Olympiad Phase 1 training.

    • NUS High School has won 108 medals - 34 Gold, 30 Silver and 44 Bronze medals and was awarded the Top School Award for the consecutive year in the Singapore Junior Chemistry Olympiad (SJChO).

     

        The SJChO provides a platform for all upper secondary students to challenge themselves in their chemical knowledge and skills. It also seeks to promote the excitement in learning and doing Chemistry as well as to identify and develop chemistry talents. This year, almost 2500 students from 40 secondary schools took part in the competition.

    • NUS High School clinched the 4th and 5th positions respectively in the Chemistry.Communication challenge and ‘Fact or Fantasy’ Quiz, organised during National Chemistry Week 2011. Chemistry.Communication aims at providing students an introduction to advanced topics in chemical sciences and their unlimited applications vital to our industry, economy and society. ‘Fact or Fantasy’ Quiz aims to put students’ knowledge of chemistry to the test and allow them to take home nuggets of information that are bound to amaze their family and friends.

     

    • NUS High School Team clinches the 2nd Runner-up and Commendation awards in CHAOS (Creative and Heuristic Application of Science) 2011
        CHAOS is a multi-disciplinary Math and Science Competition, which focuses on utilising creative     and critical thinking skills in problem solving. It is a competition jointly organized by the Gifted Education Branch of MOE, and the Faculty of Science, NUS.

     

        This is the first time that two teams from NUS High reached the finals. The team which comprises of Kee Jing Yee, Goh Xin Rong, Beverley Tan Shu Wen and Joel Tan Shi Quan achieved the 2nd runner-up award. The other team which comprises of Girish Kumar, Garett Tok Ern Liang, Ahn Soo Young and Jacelyn Yap Yi Juinn achieved the Commendation award. Congratulations to the team!

     

    • The 22nd Singapore Chemistry Olympiad Theory and Practical rounds were held in the National University of Singapore on the 16th and 30th Nov 2010 respectively. NUS High School secured a total of 1 Gold, 16 Silvers and 8 Bronzes. 7 of our students are currently in the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) Phase 1 training for selection to the National Team. The 43rd IChO would be held in Turkey in early June 2011.

     



    2010

    • NUS High School clinched 4 Gold, 8 Silver and 14 Bronze medals in the 21st Singapore Chemistry Olympiad.

     



    2009

    • Gani Zhi Hao Terry from NUS High School won a Gold medal for the 41th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO).

     

    • NUS High School team clinched 3rd place in the Chemistry Communication Challenge 2009.

     

    • CheMagic: Team Metathesis clinched 3rd prize in Science Buskers Festival 2009.

    • NUS High School clinches 5 Gold, 8 Silver and 3 Bronze medals for the 20th Singapore Chemistry Olympiad.

     



    2008

    • NUS High School students clinched Silver medals at the 5th International Junior Science Olympiad held in Korea.

     

    • 40 NUS High School Students received the plaque and certificate for perfect scores in the Australian National Chemistry Quiz.

    • NUS High School emerged as 2nd Runners-up in the Materials Science and Engineering Challenge.

    • Outstanding performance by NUS High school students at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.

     

        The NUS High team won the Palladium award at Singapore Chemical Science Fair.

     

        NUS High project awarded silver at Singapore Science and Engineering Fair.

     

    • NUS High School clinched 1 Gold, 5 Silvers and 2 Bronze medals for the 19th Singapore Chemistry Olympiad.



    2007

    • NUS High School student won Gold and Silver medals at the 4th International Junior Science Olympiad held in Taiwan.

     

    • 13 NUS High School students achieved the perfect score of 100% in the Australian National Chemistry Quiz.

     

    • 16 NUS High School students are among the Top 800 Scorers in the Australian National Chemistry Quiz.

     

    • NUS High won Top Medals at Nanyang Concept Test 2007.

     

    • NUS High students win MOE-NUS Amazing Lab Race 2007 – Overall Champion.
